Outrage over "Pit to distress" is spreading like wildfire and posts about it are positively burning up the blogosphere. Half my blogroll is talking about it, and the other half is probably reading it. I feel very proud to have been one of several catalysts to start this discussion, but I can hardly take credit for being the first. Lousia a.k.a. Morag from MamaMidwifeMadness linked to one of N is for Nurse's blogposts via Facebook that mentioned her refusal to perform "pit to distress" on one of her patients. Hearing this news angered me so that I made my own post about it. Jill at Unnecesarean followed suit and wrote an excellent informative post. Morag then wrote a post of her own today, and Rixa posted asking for input from L&D nurses who've been faced with the order of "pit to distress." In the time it took me to write this first paragraph, Rebirth and Nursing Birth both chimed in as well (please do read NB's post, she will clarify once and for all that we are not just a bunch of hippies whose imaginations have run away with us again!). And I have a feeling there will be a lot more to come.
It's both thrilling and heartbreaking to see that even as jaded and cynical as many of us have become about the state of maternity care in this country, we are still getting angry and up in arms when we hear about horrible things like these. Thrilling because it proves that this is still and always will be a fight worth fighting, and we have so many awesome women (and men!) on our side. Heartbreaking because it just seems to be getting worse and worse. Did you hear that the Florida C-section rate is above 50% now? Just atrocious and inexcusable.

Good for you! In ten years we'll look back and say "And the Pit Revolution was started in July of 2009 by a young mother and blogging phenomenon....."
*crossing my fingers reeeeally hard*
Hi Jill. Came over after you left that very nice, informative and honest comment on my blog! I will definitely do a little digging around over here. I like what I see so far.
And, just so you know, one of my placentas is happily nourishing a lovely hawthorne tree in my front yard:)
*sigh* I went home and ranted to Pete about it who stood there open mouthed shaking his head. I find the idea that WE PAY these people for this type of treatment abhorent. (even if I can't spell it..)
You should be proud! (Here from www.thefeministbreeder.com). And I'll be posting these links on my own blog tomorrow.
Bring on da noise! We need to be screaming about this. Thank you for getting us going.
